This Alan Watts quote is profoundly life-changing for me, and has in part, inspired much of my coaching practice. So driven to an end, to a goal, to winning, to achieving, I have let elements of life go by unappreciated.
Not until I had my children did I start to slow down, if only a little bit. I started taking in the precious moments and was truly present, hoping they would never pass by. But then you catch yourself lamenting about your toddler, "I cannot wait until he's able to..." insert some act of self-sufficiency. And there I've done it again, out of the present and into the future.
This quote by philosopher Alan Watts gets to the very essence of life - the only thing that exists is this very moment. "We are living in an eternal now."
This coaching practice is not about eschewing achievement or goals. No, to the contrary. We can have bold goals and work towards them with tenacity...we simply must realize that the journey is the true point. If we recognize that, then we are doing ourselves justice. So let's have that journey be one filled with less fear and more courage, driven by authenticity and truth to self.
"This is the real secret of life - to be completely engaged in what you are doing in the here and now" - Alan Watts
